In the early hours of November 5th last year a patrol of the Policia Municipal in Girona ( Spain ) discovered a Giant burning in the entrance of the City-Hall where he was displayed every year during the annual festival.

The giant, Xavier Cugat, represented a famous former inhabitant of the city, a violinist. It was completely destroyed in the fire, which police are treating as arson.

The giant was one of several assembled ready to dance on the last morning if the festival. The other giants were undamaged.

The local giant group; 'Els Amics dels Gegants de Girona' are already planning to build a replica, at an estimated cost of 600,000 pesetas, about 3,000 pounds sterling.
